Chicago: One of the main advantages offered by Android mobile operating system is that, the platform allows users to access core applications on Google Play Store. Not just that, Android also allows Google to push out the updates to individual apps without having to release an entire software update.
We have already seen Google bringing the apps like Camera, Clock and Keyboard apps on to the Play Store, now it’s time for Google to add two more apps – Phone and Contacts!
Yes, recently Google added the ‘Contacts’ and ‘Phone’ apps to Play Store. So the users will now be having regular updates for Phone and Contacts apps as well. Previously, when Google published its standalone Contacts and Phone apps, the company had pulled back the app very soon. But on 9th December 2015 they were added again with some slight modifications.
Modified Phone and Contacts apps!
- When Google added the Phone and Contacts apps back to Play Store, it has added a couple of nuances to the Phone app. On the updated Phone app, the users will now be able to block callers from dialer. Also, when you call any business that can be recognized by Google, you can see the relevant information like where exactly it’s located and when it will be opened. More importantly, these apps are now separate from core operating system and the updates will happen more frequently.
- Android Police reported that, along with the call blocking feature, the Phone app has been added with an option to display the nicknames of contacts instead of the full name (if nicknames are saved in contacts). Also, a new voicemail count feature has been added for carrier bundled devices. On the other hand, Contacts app has also received some streamlined tweaks.
However, the reason for Google pulling back the published apps is not revealed. But it didn’t take much time to make a comeback. Google’s very own Phone and Contacts apps returned to Play Store coinciding with the release of Android 6.0.1.
The main reason for Google posting the core apps on Play Store is that, the apps can be independently updated so that they can have frequent updates. Even if you don’t have an Android One, Google play Edition device or the Nexus, you can still side load the apps on your Marshmallow device, but only Contacts app seems to be functional.
